May 2000 - Possibility of a 28 Day Program ???
We got together with Dr. Joaquin and a couple of other A.A. Members to discuss if it would be possible to start a 28 day treatment program in Cuba. Presently men and women with serious alcoholic problems are treated at Psychiatric Hospitals as Psychiatric Patients and not as alcoholics. Their treatment does not address the symptoms of alcoholism.
A.A. Members in Cuba have heard of programs being offered, such as the Betty Ford Clinic mostly through viewing a movie on television. We were asked if there were such clinics and did they help the alcoholic to recover, as the success rate of alcoholics being sent to Psychiatric Hospitals was very low.
I told them, that I would address this matter on the Internet Site and see if we could get a response from some members who work in the field to see if we could get any ideas. If you are reading this and have any ideas, please e-mail me at >
January 2000 - Alcoholic Anonymous Members in the city of Ciego de Avila Cuba [ population approximate. 50,000 ] are in the process now of making arrangements to obtain a building and government approval for the operation of a "24 Hour House" ....... a house where new members would be able to live with other members in their early stage of recovery similar to a detox.
September 28, 1999 - the 6th Annual Alcoholics Anonymous was held in Santiago de Cuba, the capital city in the province of the same name. .. .. located in the southeast corner of the island.
Lawyers from Mexico - told by members in Ceigo de Avila 1999 for the past 3 - 4 years have been trying to persuade the Cuban Government of the benefits that our program has to the people of Cuba, as it is almost an underground society.
June 1993 - First AA Meeting in Santa Clara, Cuba - this story is written with permission from one of our dear AA brothers Arkie K. from Honolulu "Lorenzo along with two other Santa Clara drunks who had agreed to stay sober for the August occasion. I had a sponsee with me from La Jolla and Mike who spoke Spanish. We picked up one of the Grupo Sueno members, Ernesto in Havana for the journey.
The meeting began I told my story (Arkie K. also speaks Spanish) Mike told his. Then, one of the newcomers asked Mike how long he had been sober, Mike replied 25 years (at that time), he then asked me, which I had replied 20 years (at that time). He then asked Ernesto, which Ernesto replied 3 months. Thereafter, they ignored me and Mike and concentrated on Ernesto with whom they could relate :-) It's the typical AA story :-) "
January 18, 1993 - First AA Meeting in Havana, Cuba - also written with our brother Arkie K.'s permission - "I was fortunate to attend that first AA meeting. Two days later, we got the group of seven Cuban alcoholics to choose a name. They picked Grupo Sueno. I returned in June of that year, with a sponsee and we got the second meeting started in Santa Clara. - I see from the list that both are still in business."
